It’s a castle on the beautiful island of Panagia, in Parga. It was built in 1808 by the French, during their stay in the region between 1797 and 1814.
There is an inscription above its stone door, next to the powder store: Défense de la Patrie, A.D. 1808.
Location & Strategic Importance
The castle’s purpose was to monitor the part of the bay of Parga, which could not be controlled from the large Venetian castle of Parga.
Construction, Architectural and Fortification Elements
Today, we can still see the enclosure, the gate and the fortress. All covered by the dense vegetation of the small picturesque island.
